Look, I’ve been paying for umbrella insurance for over a decade. Every year, $265 just gone, like clockwork. You never think you’ll actually need it.
Then my kid happened.
He was backing out of the driveway last fall. Didn’t see the neighbor’s Tesla. Or the neighbor. Both got crunched. Total bills came to like $187k after hospital stay and everything.
My auto liability topped out at $250k. So I thought,cool, umbrella will handle the difference.
LOL.
Here’s where I’m supposed to tell you how amazing the customer service was. But I’m not.
Called USAA the day after the accident. Sat on hold for 47 minutes. When someone finally picked up, they transferred me to the wrong department twice. I’m not even joking.
The rep told me, “you need to file with your auto carrier first.” Um, yeah, obviously. But I just wanted to give you a heads up.
They said not necessary.
That was mistake #1 on their part. And #2 on mine for listening.
Fast forward two months. Auto claim is settled, they paid out their max. I call USAA back to trigger the umbrella portion. Now they’re asking for documentation I submitted back in October. “We don’t have any record of that call.”
Of course you don’t.
Why umbrella claims get messy
Turns out, umbrella claims are handled totally separate from your auto or home claims. Different adjusters. Different systems. Sometimes different companies completely if you bought your umbrella somewhere else.
Most people don’t know this. I didn’t know this.
One of my buddies is a claims adjuster at State Farm and he told me — notify BOTH carriers right away, even if you think the primary will cover everything. Because if you wait?
The umbrella carrier can argue you failed to give timely notice. And they love that.
Also, check your underlying limits. I learned the hard way that if your auto policy drops below the minimum required for your umbrella (like you try to save $50 by lowering coverage), they can deny the entire thing. Even if the accident happened while you had enough. Even if you didn’t know.
Yeah. Bunch of BS.

The customer service reality check
I’ve been digging around online about this because I was so frustrated. Talked to some folks on a finance forum — one guy said USAA used to be amazing but their customer service has “plummeted over the past decade” and it’s “nearly impossible to get a human on the phone” [14†L15-L19].
He wasn’t wrong.
Other people swear by Amica. Like, actually happy. One person said 15+ years with them for car, home, umbrella — zero issues, always responsive [15†L29-L31]. Another user from SoCal had both a flood AND a car accident within the same week. USAA actually handled both well for them — paid for a rental house for months while their flooded home got fixed, and premiums barely went up [15†L14-L25].
So maybe it depends on who you get. Or which state you’re in. Or the phase of the moon. I don’t know.
I’m thinking about switching to Amica or maybe Progressive. Someone on Bogleheads said Progressive was the best they’ve dealt with between Progressive, Geico, and State Farm [14†L32-L34]. Geico supposedly offers umbrella for like $150–$300 a year for $1 million in coverage [23†L17-L18].
Things I wish someone told me years ago
Keep a log. Every call, date, time, who you talked to. I started doing this after the second transfer and it saved my butt later.
Call your agent. Not just the 1-800 number. Independent agents can file claims for you directly with the carrier, makes everything way faster [0†L25-L27].
Don’t assume anything is covered. Umbrella typically excludes intentional acts (obviously), business stuff, and certain dog breeds. Some carriers won’t cover Dobermans or Rottweilers [1†L12-L14]. If you have a pit bull? Good luck.
Also, they won’t pay for punitive damages in most states. So if you really screwed up and the jury wants to punish you? That’s on you [11†L30-L33].
The thing that really gets me is how slow everything moved. My claim took almost six months from start to finish. Five calls. Three “we’ll call you back” promises that never happened. One supervisor who sounded like he just woke up from a nap.
And for what? The umbrella portion ended up being like $12k after everything. That’s nothing to an insurance company. But they sure made me work for it.
Bottom line
Umbrella insurance is still worth having. I’m not saying cancel it. The cost is too low to justify the risk — literally under a dollar a day for a million dollars of coverage [23†L16-L18]. One bad accident and your savings, your home equity, your kids’ college fund — gone.
But don’t expect the customer service to be good. Expect the opposite. Document everything. Call both carriers immediately. Read your exclusions. And maybe, just maybe, avoid USAA for umbrella if you can.
I’m shopping around next renewal. Progressive, Amica, Geico — whoever picks up the phone fastest.
Because when you’re already stressed about a lawsuit or medical bills, the last thing you need is an automated menu telling you “your call is very important to us.”
No. My claim is important. Answer the damn phone.
